For our third virtual interview in the Reflections on Faith series, taking place on August 18, we are honored to welcome Barbara Sostaita. Barbara is an Assistant Professor of Latin American and Latino Studies at the University of Illinois Chicago. She is the author of Sanctuary Everywhere: The Fugitive Sacred in the Sonoran Desert (Duke University Press, 2024), and she is currently working on a book in collaboration with her father, Pastor Daniel Sostaita. 

Daniel Sostaita, Red Latina CBFNC, will facilitate the conversation with Barbara on what it means to practice “sanctuary everywhere” during a time of unprecedented immigrant surveillance and detention. Barbara will share how communities across the U.S., from the US-Mexico border to Chicago and North Carolina, are imagining ways of defending and protecting those most at risk of harm.
