We asked participants in the 2025-2026 Helping Churches Thrive Shared Learning Cohort to share some insights about how the new initiative is helping their church. Read below what participants from First Baptist Church in Elkin, NC had to say.
Why do you think the Helping Churches Thrive Shared Learning Cohort is right for your church?
Through the Helping Churches Thrive Shared Learning Cohort, we have surrounded ourselves with like-minded congregations facing similar challenges and opportunities. The solidarity alone has been a source of strength for us. The structure and framework of the program equips lay leaders to guide conversations typically only moderated by pastors which generates positive energy and greater transparency. Accountability seems to be built-in to the initiative, permitting our church to celebrate the many things we’re doing well while not avoiding the areas for growth that contribute to thriving.
What do you hope will be the outcome of participating in the Helping Churches Thrive Shared Learning Cohort?
It is my hope that the shared learning happening between churches within our cohort will happen within our congregation, as newcomers and long-time members alike learn from one another and engage the many voices of wisdom and truth that we’ve been introduced to through Helping Churches Thrive. The world around us is rapidly changing but this process really slows us down and invites us to camp out in certain areas crucial to thriving.
How has the process been fruitful so far? What have you learned?
The process continues to be very fruitful. The Helping Churches Thrive Shared Learning Cohort reinforces the value of structured learning and the necessity of establishing intentional spaces where all congregants are provided with opportunities to listen, learn and contribute. I think what I am also learning through this process is that many of our traditional spaces for “making decisions” can so easily stifle collaboration and creativity. Collaboration and creativity seem to be at the core of this program.
