Winston-Salem, NC (August 17, 2026)—The CBF of North Carolina (CBFNC) Coordinating Council recently voted to name Randy Carter as Vocational Formation Director (VFD). Randy currently serves as pastor of Temple Baptist Church in Durham and as CBFNC’s Welcome Network Director.
In his new role, Randy will serve as CBFNC’s representative to the Center for Calling and Ministry at Campbell University Divinity School. He will work closely with Andy Hale, associate executive coordinator and other staff, to coordinate CBFNC’s participation in the collaborative, as well as CBFNC ministries related to theological education, Christian higher education and other vocational formation efforts. He will continue to serve as the director of the CBFNC Welcome Network.
“I am grateful and honored to step into a new, expanded role with CBFNC,” Randy observed. “My ministry with the Welcome Network has been fulfilling, and I know working with the gifted saints across the Fellowship on aspects of God’s calling will lead us to new and exciting opportunities. I believe the calling focus has the potential to strengthen every person and church, clergy and laity alike, for a shared mission across NC.”
In addition to Temple Baptist Church in Durham, Randy served previously as pastor of several churches in North Carolina, including New Hope Baptist, Raleigh, First Baptist, Hillsborough, and Grassy Creek Baptist, Bullock. He also served as a campus minister at San Francisco State University.
“I am excited for Randy to expand his responsibilities within our staff team,” says Larry Hovis, CBFNC Executive Coordinator. “He has been deeply involved in CBFNC as a pastor and a leader within our fellowship for decades. As a staff member leading the Welcome Network, he has proven himself to be an invaluable resource to our fellowship. He is uniquely qualified to lead this new calling initiative in collaboration with his alma mater, Campbell University Divinity School and other partners.”
Randy’s educational achievements include degrees from Campbell University Divinity School (Doctor of Ministry), Duke University (Master of Theology), Golden Gate Theological Seminary (Master of Divinity) and East Texas Baptist University (Bachelor of Arts).
The Center for Calling and Ministry at Campbell University Divinity School coordinates a collaborative network of ministry partners committed to strengthening cultures of calling and supporting current and emerging pastoral leaders. As part of Lilly Endowment’s Pathways for Tomorrow Large-Scale Collaboration Initiative, the network includes Baptist Women in Ministry, Baptist Women in Ministry of North Carolina, Campbell University Divinity School, Campbell University’s Office of Spiritual Life, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of North Carolina and Passport Camps. Together, these partners develop resources, programs and learning pathways that help Christians explore vocation, cultivate vocational discernment and respond to God’s call.
Randy is married to Rebecca, who serves as a Care Manager with The ARC of NC. They have seven children.
